History and development
From its beginnings in 2004 to an institution focused on applied learning in Hanoi, Thanh Do University connects academic knowledge with professional practice and everyday life. Its development is told through key milestones and nine introduction videos spanning 2016 to May 2026.
The beginnings from 2004 to 2008
On 30 November 2004, Thanh Do Private College of Technology – the predecessor of today’s Thanh Do University – was established under Decision No. 7687/QĐ-BGD&ĐT of the Ministry of Education and Training. On 26 June 2006, it was renamed Thanh Do College of Technology under Decision No. 3207/QĐ-BGD&ĐT as it grew in scale and programmes.
The institution was built on its founding educators’ commitment to education and professional training. The Thanh Do Driver Training Centre was established in 2008, adding another setting for vocational skills development.
The transition to university status from 2009 to 2013
On 27 May 2009, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 679/QĐ-TTg establishing Thanh Do University by upgrading Thanh Do College of Technology. This opened a new stage of academic development, building on its foundations since 2004.
Students’ professional activities reflected the emphasis on practical learning. In 2012, a university student team won Honda’s eco-driving and fuel-efficiency competition in Vietnam and subsequently competed in Tokyo. In 2013, the institution expanded into health education with Pharmacy and Nursing, adding fields directly connected to community needs.
Teaching innovation and wider connections from 2014 to 2019
The university widened academic cooperation, including connections with institutions in Japan and South Korea. In 2017, it hosted an international scientific conference on stem cell technology derived from the umbilical cord membrane, providing a forum linking teaching and research.
Thanh Do also introduced blended learning in 2017, combining in-person study with technology and digital resources. Governance restructuring and the development of the Thanh Do Culture Handbook followed in 2019. These initiatives addressed how learning was organised, how the institution operated and how its community worked together.
The four videos below follow Thanh Do through 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 (in Vietnamese).

Quality assurance and academic development from 2020 to 2023
In 2020, the university received a 3-star assessment as an applied institution under University Performance Metrics (UPM). National institutional accreditation followed in 2021. Several academic programmes were accredited in 2022 and 2023, extending quality assurance to both institutional and programme levels.
The Journal of Scientific Research and Development was established in 2022, creating an additional channel for academic publication and exchange. From this period, the university also invested in its open Science and Education Library to widen access to learning materials and knowledge.

Two decades of development and the QS Stars milestone in 2024 and 2025
In 2024, Thanh Do marked 20 years since the founding of its predecessor college. The anniversary recognised generations of educators, staff, learners and partners while looking towards further development in practice-based education and knowledge sharing.
On 30 December 2025, QS announced an overall 4-star QS Stars rating for Thanh Do University. The university reported 5-star results in five criteria: Teaching, Facilities, Employability, Good Governance and Social Impact. QS Stars assesses institutions against rating criteria; the result is distinct from a position in the QS World University Rankings.

Continuing development in 2026
In 2026, Thanh Do announced its 2026–2030 direction as a human-centred university in the AI era. Its priorities include independent thinking, practical capability, physical and mental well-being, and responsible use of technology. This direction is being developed through teaching and learner support activities.
A 2026 seminar series on responsible AI use and governance brought research ethics and academic integrity into academic discussion. For learners, technological capability is therefore connected with responsibility towards knowledge, society and their future professions.

An educational philosophy for personal and professional growth
Thanh Do’s current philosophy is expressed as Trí – Năng – Hòa – Nhân, which the university explains through ICON: Intelligence, Competence, Oneness and Nobility. Together, they connect intellectual development with the ability to act, adapt and live in harmony, while placing character and human values at the purpose of education.
WILL stands for Work-Integrated Learning and Living. It connects academic study with professional practice and life experience: classrooms, workplaces and communities all contribute to learning, giving students opportunities to develop specialist knowledge alongside collaboration, problem-solving and independent learning.
Study options and professional experience
The university’s 2026 admissions information lists 14 undergraduate majors across technology, business and law, languages and social sciences, and health. Options include Information Technology, Automotive Engineering Technology, Business Administration, Law, English, Chinese, Vietnamese Studies, Pharmacy and Nursing. Prospective students should consider each programme’s curriculum and entry requirements alongside their own career plans.
One example of workplace-linked education is a Nursing programme developed with Dien Hong Elderly Care Centre. Its published model combines three days at the employer with two days at the university, giving access to a professional care setting during training. This schedule applies to that specific programme.
Professional experience can also extend overseas. In 2026, the university shared the experience of Automotive Engineering Technology students who completed a workplace semester in Japan through cooperation with LETCO. Such experiences introduce learners to professional processes and expectations in another cultural setting.
ThaDo EduPark and campus life
At Km 15, National Road 32, Hoai Duc, Hanoi, ThaDo EduPark brings together teaching rooms, laboratories, practice workshops, the library, student accommodation, sports spaces and health support services. The campus is developed as an integrated setting for study and daily life.
Shared spaces and sports extend the experience beyond formal classes. For learners arriving from other provinces or from abroad, an integrated campus makes it easier to settle into a new environment, meet others and organise everyday routines.
Connecting with international learners and partners
Thanh Do develops international connections through academic cooperation, research, exchanges and language and cultural experiences. In 2026, it announced a cooperation agreement with Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (China), adding opportunities in health-related fields. Study, exchange and internship opportunities are presented with programme-specific partners and participation conditions.
The university’s 2026 international admissions notice sets out its 2026–2028 initiative to attract overseas learners, together with application and language requirements. Applicants who need further Vietnamese preparation can explore a preparatory pathway. Scholarships and accommodation support are subject to programme conditions and selection procedures.
Prospective students, researchers and international partners are invited to explore programmes, academic exchange and cooperation with Thanh Do University. The journey that began in 2004 continues through new learners and new partnerships.
